Retail licencePerpetual licence
Office 2016 Home & Business
Download, installation and activation – explained step by step.
Before you start
- No other Microsoft Office may be installed on the computer. Remove any older version completely first.
- You need an internet connection for the download and the activation.
- Microsoft Teams is not part of the package and is installed separately.
- Have the licence key from our email at hand.
2 Download
Home & Business is a retail licence. There is no ISO and no installer to pass around: you redeem the licence key once in a Microsoft account, and Microsoft then delivers the programs through that account.
Redeem the licence key (microsoft365.com/setup) Install later from here
The licence key is redeemed exactly once. After that it belongs to the account – keep the sign-in details for that account safe.
3 Installation
- Open microsoft365.com/setup and sign in with a Microsoft account. An existing account is fine; if you do not have one, you create it in this step.
- Enter the licence key from our email. Microsoft confirms the redemption and then shows the install button.
- Start the installation, pick the language and – on a PC – 64-bit. The package downloads and sets up Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
4 Activation
- There is no second step: redeeming the key in the account is what assigns the licence. The programs sign in with the same account on first start and are activated.
- The licence key is never typed into the program. If a window asks for a key, the wrong edition is usually installed – sign in with the right account instead.
- For a reinstall or a new computer you do not need the licence key again: signing in is enough, the licence lives in the account.
Home & Business has no phone activation, and it does not need one. When something goes wrong it is almost always the account you are signed in with.
Installing Microsoft Teams
Teams has not been part of the Office package for a few years now. You can get it from Microsoft free of charge and install it separately.
What the Microsoft account means
- The licence belongs to the account, not to the computer. Whoever holds the account holds the licence – so use your own account, not a reseller’s.
- The licence covers one computer. On a new device you simply sign in with the same account; the old device loses the activation.
- Under “Services and subscriptions” in your account you can see the redeemed licence and start any later installation from there.
Windows and Mac
On a Windows PC every step works as described above: account, redeem, install. Typing the key into the program is not part of it.
On a Mac the route is the same. The installer also comes from the account; afterwards you sign in to Word or Excel with that same account.
