Installing and activating Office on a Mac

For Office LTSC 2016, 2019, 2021 and 2024 on the Mac. No licence key is ever typed in – the second part of the package activates Office by itself.

Before you start

  • No other Microsoft Office may be left on the Mac. Steps 1 to 10 remove an existing installation completely – including an expired Microsoft 365 trial.
  • macOS in one of the three most recent major versions released by Apple, on Apple silicon (M1–M4) or Intel.
  • About 10 GB of free disk space and an internet connection. Part 1 is roughly 2.8 GB.
  • The administrator password of the Mac. A licence key is not needed.

1The three files

Everything you need is right here. Part 1 is the regular Office package and comes straight from Microsoft – the same installer serves Microsoft 365, Office LTSC 2021 and Office LTSC 2024. Part 2 is the small serializer that registers your volume licence.

2Step by step

Steps 1 to 10 clear out an old Office, steps 11 to 20 install and activate the new one. Depending on the Office and macOS version the windows look slightly different; the sequence stays the same.

  1. Download the removal tool (button above). Skip steps 1 to 10 only if Office has never been installed on this Mac.

  2. Open the Finder and go to the Downloads folder.

  4. Click Continue.

  5. Click Continue again in the next window.

  7. Choose “Remove Microsoft Office completely” or “Remove Office 365 and Office completely” and click Continue.

  12. Download Part 1 first and Part 2 afterwards. Both files then sit in your Downloads folder.

  17. The installation is prepared and carried out. Depending on your Mac this takes a few minutes.

  18. Part 1 is done. Open an Office program and choose “Help > Check for Updates”. If updates are offered, run them. If nothing appears, or an error does, just close the window – it makes no difference to the activation.

  19. Repeat the same sequence with Part 2: double-click the file, Continue, Install.

  20. That’s it. Office is activated and has no expiry date – open Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Outlook and get going.

Important: installing Part 2 activates Office by itself. A licence key is never entered anywhere on the Mac – if a window asks for one, close it and install Part 2.

Frequently asked questions

Office wants me to sign in or enter a licence key. What now?
That window belongs to Microsoft 365 and may be closed. Install Part 2; afterwards Office shows the activated volume licence under “About”.

Does this run on Apple silicon (M1 to M4)?
Yes. The package runs natively on Apple silicon and equally on older Intel Macs.

Leftovers from an old version are still causing trouble. What now?
Run the removal tool again, restart the Mac and then start over at step 11. Otherwise just get in touch through our contact page.
